India vs West Indies, Highlights 5th ODI: India Win By 9 Wickets, Clinch Five-Match Series 3-1

Highlights: India vs West Indies 5th ODI: Ravindra Jadeja clinched four wickets as the Windies were bundled out for 104 in the final ODI.

It might not have been as obvious as the six iceberg warnings doled out to Titanic in 1912, but there were enough pointers to why batting first in Thiruvananthapuram could have spelt doom. Under overcast skies, on a sticky pitch, and with dew expected later, Jason Holder's decision to bat first against inspired hosts chaperoned Windies to 104 all-out, their lowest total against India, who won the fifth and last ODI by nine wickets to romp home a scintillating 3-1 series win.
Chasing 105, the most India had to contend with was Oshane Thomas's pace. The 21-year-old fast bowler accounted for Shikhar Dhawan in his first over, getting the left-hander to play on for the second time in the series, and then extracted outside edges from two of India's best: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While Kohli's edge was dropped by Jason Holder at first slip, Rohit's caught-behind was overruled by a nasty front-foot no-ball.
Once Thomas's pace was behind them, India rattled to the target like a superfast train. Rohit topped 200 sixes en route to his 37th ODI fifty, and with Kohli's over run-a-ball 33 helped overhaul the 105-run target with 35.1 overs to spare.
It was India's bowlers who did everything but win the game in the first innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah were again phenomenal with the new ball, which swung for the first time in the series to limit Windies's strokeplay, which was already inhibited by the slow pitch on offer. Windies could tally only 10 runs for the loss of Kieran Powell and Shai Hope in the first six overs, with both the batsmen departing for ducks.
It took Marlon Samuels to turn things around, if only for a short while. Two boundaries in Bhuvneshwar's over was followed by a planned counterattack in Khaleel Ahmed's first over. To put things into contest, it was Khaleel who had taken Samuels's wicket in the last match and celebrated it with a demerit point-inviting send-off. Today, it was Samuels's turn.
Ravindra Jadeja's introduction in the tenth over, and rightly on a pitch with some moisture to aid spin, was what seeded a middle-order meltdown. The left-arm spinner struck twice in his marathon eight-over first spell, that witnessed him get rid of an attacking Samuels and then Shimron Hetmyer, before ending up with four wickets in total. Jadeja's airtight lines and lengths also allowed Khaleel and Bumrah to attack from the other end. While Khaleel got the wicket of Rovman Powell, who was promoted to open the batting in place of dropped Hemraj Chandrapaul, Bumrah picked Fabian Allen's wicket - both wickets coming off miscued pull shots - to leave the Windies reeling at 66 for 6.
It was to be Khaleel again who put an end to Jason Holder's 33-ball 25, an innings that promised to take Windies to something worth defending. Trying to hit in the air, Holder was caught at mid-off and it all went awry for Windies, if it wasn't already. Such was India's dominance at the start, in admittedly good conditions for bowling, that Kuldeep Yadav wasn't even called upon to bowl until the 23rd over of the innings. Eight Windies batsmen scored in single-digits, and the number of extras in the game outscored six of them.
The fact that India didn't need the 35.1 overs at their disposal, which is 4.4 overs fewer than what Windies lasted in this ODI, belies what this series witness: a tied game, a rare loss for India at home, and more importantly a restoration of the belief that there's some hope for this Windies side overall. With World Cup just months away, both India and Windies walk away with more answers than questions, which is what both sides would have hoped for.
Brief scores: Windies 104 in 31.5 overs (Jason Holder 25, Marlon Samuels 24; Ravindra Jadeja 4-34) vs India 105/1 in 14.5 overs (Sharma 63*, Kohli 33*; Thomas 1-33) by 9 wickets
